Marma Chiktsa - Pressure Point Therapy

Marma Chiktsa is a specialised branch of Ayurvedic bodywork. Its applications are far reaching and deeply effective. Soothing for general relaxation as well as pinpointed healing for clinical conditions.

Carrie has been practicing Marma Chikitsa for almost a decade and it is a central aspect of her in-person Ayurvedic care. For on-line care, she will often suggest the touch of certain points appropriate to the individual's situation, however, her in-person appointments receive this deep bodywork technique directly from Carrie herself which is informed not only by decades of studies in Yoga, but also by extensive practice and application of this direct pressure point therapy for a variety of issues and individuals.

As per Caraka Samhita, life is the flow of Prana in the body, it is the indicator of life on many levels - physical, mental, and soul life. There are Five Pranas (Pancha Pranas) in the body, and Marma can address all of these, as well as the other subtle subdoshas. Prana connects everything, and exists in every microchannel, cell, and function in the body. It seeks to be unhindered. As per Ayurveda, a harmonious and clear system functions normally, and regulates itself in an optimal way. Every part of you is potentially vivified by the life force of Prana. The facilitation of this is a preserved science in Ayurveda, and Marma is one of the many techniques available for its fortification. Yoga is a way to access our Marma points in our own intentional practice. With direction, you can learn to understand which Yogic practices can support you as an individual, including the relation to the Marma points. Carrie has a particular affinity to this connection and has utilised this technique in her own practice for many years. Yoga, traditionally, is a tailored therapy, made appropriate to each person on an individual basis. With Ayurvedic principles, including application of Marma within a yoga practice, you can access your own inner healer on a daily basis. Feel free to contact Carrie for more on this topic, or for an individualised Ayurvedic Therapeutic Yoga session.

Correlations have been made between cellular Prana and Mitochondrial function, which are responsible for energy, function and metabolism and can become hindered and blocked. However, I venture to state that Prana encompasses that and so much more. Although yes, as with Mitochondrial health, there is also a dietary and lifestyle aspect to Prana and our state of Pranic vitality. External support such as Marma has innumerable benefits both physical and subtle.

"Marma Sharira, a fundamental concept in Ayurveda, refers to vital points in the human body where Prana (life force) is concentrated. These anatomical locations are not only essential for maintaining health but also play a crucial role in injury prevention and trauma management. Trauma to these points can result in profound physical and psychological effects, highlighting their significance in emergency medicine and rehabilitation. Clinical studies and observations suggest that Marma therapy, which involves the stimulation and manipulation of Marma points, can accelerate the healing process and enhance the body's innate recovery mechanisms. By regulating the flow of Prana, Marma therapy has shown effectiveness in pain management, stress reduction, musculoskeletal disorders, and overall vitality enhancement. Additionally, it strengthens the immune system, supports neurological recovery, and improves quality of life...multidisciplinary integration of Marma Sharira with modern medical practices, particularly in stroke rehabilitation and trauma care." (Mishra, et al., 2025.)
